Longtime Director Mark Reed announces his retirement. He was a great leader for SCZ, good client, and extremely passionate about the good work zoo's do. He will be missed!

Mark Reed announces retirement from Sedgwick County Zoo | The Wichita Eagle

Mark Reed spent a staggering 37 years at Sedgwick County Zoo and 25 years as its director. He helped transform the establishment into arguably one of the 10 best zoos in the USA and perhaps the fact about him that I like the most is that he has apparently visited 300+ zoos in his lifetime. When he wasn't running a zoo he must have been out touring many others on various trips. :)

I'm sure it didn't hurt that his father was a veterinarian and director of the Smithsonian National Zoo.

That is a bit unfair I guess (sure it is always not what, but whom you know).

But Dr. Reed was surely chosen on merit and given his track record at SCZ one would say the zoo has lived well by having him at the helm for so long.

If one consults the zoo's South American area map both species are still represented. Not saying much though ... like.

In the species listings neither are listed.

I texted a friend who works in the herp area to find out. As they could find out easily through other areas. Tapir(s)passed away not long ago. The bear(s) have been absent for nearly a decade.

Has anyone on Zoochat seen the new elephant exhibit? How impressive is it and how does it stack up with the best African elephant exhibits at other zoos?
