to be honest I dont think a new sun bear enclosure is needed. I dont see why they cant stay in the jaguar house permanently as it is a good enclosure for them.

Once the bears have moved out of their current enclosure what will go in there or will be be demolished?

And also how many orangutans are at the zoo?

When the bears leave the jaguar enclosure another species will be coming to the zoo.

the present sun bear enclosure (previously tigers) is scheduled for demolition

I may have missed something but why are both SotJ enclosures not being used for jaguars? Does the zoo only hold one at the moment?

They have 1.1 in the Rainforest enclosure. The female that was in the Savannah side (Sofia) was moved on to Wildlife Heritage Foundation in May. The Savannah side has been empty ever since

No they have 1.1 but they only use one half of the House, which still gives them 1 indoor and 1 outdoor enclosure and atleast 2 off show dens, which does mean that the zoo has the same but empty in the other half of the house!

It always annoys me when an enclosure is demolished for the sake of it! It's not THAT bad! I'm sure it could hold something either that Chester have already or a new species?! Please don't tell me it's about to be an empty space ( very Marwell!) or playground or dinosaur area that would really annoy me!

Its not been demolished for no reason,if the Sun Bears hadn't arrived it would have gone when the Sumatran Tigers moved to Islands. The zoo requires the space and area for building a new exhibit that will use that area and alot of the surrounding area, but at present we will have to wait and see what that is going to be!

Thanks to both of you. I had forgotten how large the indoor enclosures are.

Speculating wildly:
The new species will presumably be from South America, and it would make sense for the enclosure to match its needs as closely as possibly. This makes the only real choice Puma, by my logic. According to ZTL Chilean Cougar is the only subspecies in Europe. Any other of the South American small cats would also be possibilities. Or literally anything else!

Thanks for confirming a new exhibit will be built in its place, that is better news!

Another option would be to modify it for canids and introduce maned wolves.

I'd like to see the windows moved to the back wall for viewing South American Tapir and Capybara in the outside paddock, with the reclaimed indoor space being utilised for south American reptiles, especially green anaconda.

Fat chance(s)!

What makes you think that? It'll likely hold a large South American animal carnivore. They already hold jaguar and spectacled bears. Puma have little conservational purpose, so maned wolf seem like the most likely option to me, unless they want to make major modifications!

No further comment.

I hope not!

Might aswell leave the enclosure empty, for all any visitor would see them.

You say that, but I have *never* had trouble seeing this species when visiting collections which display it - and have seen it at a total of 12 collections.

I think I must be unlucky with it Dave. Chester had them for years. I never caught so much as a glance. The archetypal no-show. The smell was only thing that convinced me they were for real! :-)

That said, I have seen them elsewhere, although fleetingly. And I can think of many other species that would make a better exhibit.
