Roman amphitheatres: fondraising for conservation?

Dear animal friends,

I hope I don't annoy you with this silly concept, conjured up by my cerebral escapades. The dire situation of our planet's species made me ponder about some sort of new way to help fondraise and bring awareness to this crisis or mass extinction as some call it.

Now for the concept as the title hints at: in ancient times the Romans had a habit of killing scores of exotic creatures on the stages of their theatres. Several of these extinction entertainment facilities still survives to this day. So my question to you is: could this macarbre symbolism be of use in repurposing the stages for fondraising for conservation with theatrical spectacles? Or does the symbolism feel far-fetched and of little value?

If you find it valuable, do you have any suggestions?

My own idea would be to find a suitable amphitheatre, find a zoo nearby and get them involved in the undertaking.

Thank you for your time.

Depends on the attitude of the zoos close to the theatre and of the country itself. The UK is currently on a downer about using animals (esp wild ones) as entertainment; whlist in the USA you'd likely have more chance for such a project to work.

Many zoos you might find the only major travelling entertainment you could get would be bird of prey displays. Most other animals would be unlikely to be trained or transported off-site - at least big ones for a theatre. Most interaction animals are smaller and focused at schools and similar setups and thus are cheaper and easier to transport and less risk.

It's not a bad idea - but most zoos that would go for such a scheme would already be trying to do it on-site rather htan off-site.

What about the millions of people that died at this places in the glorious days of the Romans ?

What comes next-building a conservation and breeding center for rare Birds in Auschwitz ?

Well Bib Fortuna, I am not aware of any rare birds on the extermination agenda of the nazis. But sure we could let Russel Crowe make a solo act and give him a few coins being Noah and a gladiator at the same time ;).
Overread, it is some good points you have. Perhaps if you could make som artists perform instead just for fundraising. I guess the detalis of a show would be the hard part. But if you find a viable concept one place it could then be exported to other regions. Perhaps one should make a play and then tour the different amphitheatres.

There are also several unused bullrings, even in the portuguese speaking areas of Africa.
