ZSL London Zoo ZSL London Zoo News 2016

The former pygmy hippo pool (elephant bath) was signed for Tapir but they were together in the main indoor area last week. bearded pigs opposite them.

From memory: kinkajou, alaotran gentle lemur mixed with large hairy armadillo., Meerkats, yellow mongoose and ferrets. Can't remember anything else, a couple of empty enclosures.

Thank you pipaluk, quite the mish mash still, perhaps some focus is needed incorporating a S.E Asia theme, with its proximity to the Sumatran tigers.

I believe there are currently 3 empty enclosed exhibits in the Casson plus as mentioned the second inside Tapir area is unused when as now the two Tapirs are housed together. The inside enclosed exhibits tend to be those associated with the Animal Adventure team often housing those animals involved in the various demonstrations or any displaced from the children's zoo.

Weird, Hutan (the male tapir) has been in the old pygmy hippo area for a very long time...maybe they're trying to breed them?

has there Been Any New News on the New Snowdon Colobus Monkey Exhibit yet?

Given the 'failure' of Land of the Lions this year (50k drop in visitors when an increase was expected!) perhaps they should scale down the plans & bring in multiple smaller exhibits instead! There is plenty of space on the North bank in particular, room for a cheap gibbon enclosure on the footprint of the abandoned aviaries for a start. Plenty of other areas that can be developed too, why are they obsessed with single multi million pound exhibits in a zoo that is short on mammals & birds if it really still wants to be a major zoo!

Yeah You Are Right, I Think They Should add Smaller Enclosures aswell, For Example, Add New Species (Such as Giant Otters or Peccary) and Just Build New Enclosures Throughout the Years and Maybe 1 Big Main Exhibit Every 1-2 Years if they have to Money to do so.

Considering they're still in the process of funding and that the actual exhibit likely won't open till the end of 2017 (maybe even beginning of 2018) I sincerely doubt anything new has emerged as of late. All I've heard is their intention to do so, that they have received some funds and that there will be colobus, dik-dik, duiker, grey parrot and a smaller monkey species in the exhibit.

And Also the Plans to Keep Pygmy Hippo and Red River Hog in the Snowdon Aswell

I think it's been said earlier that these were only shown on original artists impression, they won't be in the final (proposed) exhibit, they weren't a realistic possibly!

Yeah no the hippos not only is unrealistic but also is unnecessary, considering how much money was spent on their current enclosure.

And the hogs were an idea I put forward on here, I'm quite sure they never made the original design, and as pipaluk says they too wouldn't fit the enclosure.

Red river hogs were on the artist's impression shown at the AGM, along with pygmy hippo!

Oh really?! Well that's interesting...did it show what the other monkey species was (not that it will become this species)?

Sorry I didn't notice that, maybe someone else did? I was so shocked that it appeared they intended to fit the RRH & pygmy hippo in that I didn't pay much attention to the rest!

Even if they could keep them together( unlikely), or even with just one species, the ground would just be bare earth in no time.

With this exhibit in mind I noted the behaviour of the large Colobus group at Howletts recently. Visited the exhibit three different times- results; inactive/sleeping twice, active once....

Hutan (male tapir) was in there when Gertie (female) had Adi (calf).
When Adi moved on Hutan moved in with Gertie but I believe he moved back into the separate area c January this year. I believe Gertie had a long but ultimately unsuccessful pregnancy this year.

The group at Cotswold Wildlife Park have always been pretty damn active when I have visited, as were those at Port Lympne and Colchester, however; moreover, although not the same species as that intended for the Snowden, I have always found King Colobus to be very active too, as were Angolan Colobus on the one occasion I have seen the species.

I had the same experience as you at Howletts though, if my memory of the one time I visited the collection is accurate ;)

Quick visit today; some updates.

All six gorillas about, good to see Gernot feeding from Jukie, and Alika becoming increasingly independent and Kumbuka increasingly calmer.

There's a new baby colobus, and the group were particularly active when I visited today.

All four tigers together, lovely to see Karis and Achilles playfighting and Jae Jae taking up a babysitting position whilst the keepers did some training with Melati.

Saw the male aye-aye and male tamandua being very active. Also saw everything active/appear in the Night Life (all four of the currently present rat species, the bats, the lorises, pottos and bushbabies).

The okapi were both around, and seemed interested in each other over the fence :)

Lionesses in their usual spot, no sign of Bhanu. The langurs were on the floor of their outdoor area; the first time I've ever seen them there.

Yes, chinchillas seem to be gone and Hutan and Gerty in together in the Casson :D

Was the birth of an aye aye, mentioned previously, ever confirmed, or was this wishful thinking?

I haven't seen Salem the female in a while, so it could be true, but Panthera (and zoogiraffe?) never did tell us where they got this news from so no, not confirmed yet.

I talked about to a member of staff when I was there, so unless she hadn't heard about it and didnt want to reveal ignorance I'm confident it's true.
