So can anyone help me with the worldwide captive aye-aye population? I've made a start on the European population, but would like some help with finishing it off and maybe also adding the Japanese and USA populations too?

Here's what I've got so far for the European population:

London (1.1.1) = Tany, Salem, ?

Chester (1.1) = Raz, Mamy

Bristol (1.3) = Noah, Sabrina Tahiry Kambana

Frankfurt (3.2) = Malala ? ?, Kintana Tsara

Durrell (2.3.1??) = ? Pan, ? ? Ala, ?

Any assistance is much appreciated :)

Durrell (2.3.1??) = ? Pan, ? ? Ala, ?

I have Durrell as having 4.3 (The youngster born in late June is a male).

Japan There are 5.4 at Tokyo Ueno.

Sorry, I don't know the names of the Japanese aye-ayes.

The Jersey boys are Alain, Pan, Patrice + this year's youngster (not yet named?)
The 3 girls are Zanvie, Vassago & Ala.

In the USA, the Duke Lemur Center in North Carolina has 5.8 Aye-ayes (but I don't know their names :))

I have worked out that the 5.8 at DLC are:

Nosferatu
Poe
Merlin
Norman Bates
Grendel

Endora
Ozma
Morticia
Ardrey
Kali
Angelique
Bellatrix
Elphaba

As for the other US collections, I think I have them figured out to this:

Cincinnati = 1.1 (Niffy, Medea)

Cleveland Metroparks = 1.1(?) (Ichabod?, Caliban)

Denver Zoo = 1.1(?) (Ozony, Lucrezia?)

Henry Doorly Zoo = 1.1 (Warlock, Claudia)

Philadelphia Zoo = 3.1 (Tolkein Smeagol Loki, Medusa)

San Diego Zoo = 1.2 (Nirina, Styx Fady)

This correlates with the worldwide total of 58 (since there were 56 at the beginning of the year and 2 have been born this year at London and Jersey).

As for the beginnings of Ueno, I know the names of one family of three; dad Hitchcock, mum Tiergarten and son Mafi. Still don't know the remaining two males and three males though, nor do I know the name of the 2011 Frankfurt baby and 2011 San Francisco baby (who is now at Frankfurt).

According to their website the Duke Lemur Center at Duke University in North Carolina has 17 aye-ayes.
Aye-Aye | Duke Lemur Center

Worldwide, the captive population of aye-ayes stands at about 50. Thirty-three aye-ayes live in the United States, all managed by Duke, with 17 of those living on-site at DLC. Breeding has also occurred at the Jersey Wildlife Preservation Trust which holds 6 (4.2). In addition, the Bristol Zoo, London Zoo, Paris Zoo and Tokyo Zoo each holds one pair of aye-ayes.

@ShonenJake13:

Your US data is correct, for the most part. I can't confirm names, though Ozma and Endora at the DLC are correct for sure.

Unless something has changed within the last few months, Cleveland has only 0.1. I'm not sure about Denver, though, as I never got any info on their aye ayes (fun fact: also the only US institution with aye ayes that I haven't been to).

Thanks for posting this, though, it's helping me update my info a bit.

2011 Frankfurt aye-aye baby is called Kimala.

As for the aye-ayes at Ueno, these consist of males Mamyroa, Hitchcock, Dimy, Faly and Mafi, and females Soa, Tiergarten, Hoavy and Hira.

Literally all I need now is the name of 2011 San Francisco baby :')

So after a lot of research, this is what I have come to in my findings.

A diverse roster of the grim, macabre and mystical, if ever I saw one.

Duke Lemur Center (5.10) = Nosferatu Poe Merlin Norman-Bates Grendel, Endora Ozma Morticia Ardrey Lucrezia Medusa Angelique Bellatrix Elphaba

You say there's 5.10, you give names for 5.9, but there are only 5.8. I can confirm that number because I visited two days ago. Otherwise you're close on our population.

@Maguari: I agree, and the names are quite fitting for creatures as mysterious and odd-looking as the aye aye.

I can confirm there are 5.9 as the DLC themselves told me on Facebook...Kali was recently switched for Medusa and Lucrezia still lives at the DLC...

The 5.10 was an honest mistake, me adding the two females I hadn't previously listed to the DLC colony in my head

Oh, my apologies, I guess the tour guide was incorrect. Thanks for helping me correct my info, then. You've gotten more answers from the DLC page than I ever have!

Ozony died last year. I think Bellatrix and Smeagol are supposed to be a breeding pair in Denver, but I don't know if this has happened yet. Ichabod should be at the DLC as well.

Where did Ueno get 9 aye-ayes from? Mamyroa & Soa are the original pair & Hitchcock was sent there from the US, but I've never heard of those other 6.

So to summarise:

The current European population is 10,10,1

The current North American population is 13,14

The current Asian population is 5,4

When I left school in 1973 the world popualtion was thought to be 11.

A pair held at Tananarive Zoo and 9 in the wild.

How times have changed.
