ZSL London Zoo ZSL London Zoo News 2016

I think it likely will be, and once they pass away a new breeding pair will arrive (maybe siamangs because of their striped neighbours' Sumatran heritage?).

Also, visited the zoo today. Only a whistle stop visit to look at my favourites.

Bhanu is in with all three of the lionesses now. Rubi was seated atop the platform in the main paddock, with Heidi and Indi in the back corner and Bhanu seated under a tree near the bridge. All seemed relaxed.

Jae Jae was spotted being a doting tiger dad and playing with both Achilles and Karis whilst Melati was on the prowl.

Kumbuka seemed very highly strung, likely because of the increase in attention following his 'breakout'. Poor chap, his escape has made it worse for him :( also, side note, Effie seems to have reclaimed Gernot....! Jukie was seen carrying Alika on her back and Zaire was keeping away from Kumbuka, but Effie was wandering around carrying Gernot again!

Okapis seem very interested in one another; I hope this means Oni may have her first calf soon.

The lemurs were all happy snoozing indoors. Saw the male aye-aye Tany feeding on a coconut, using his finger :D no sign of female Salem and baby Malcolm, and I doubt there will be for the foreseeable if it continues to be as noisy as it was in there today! Loads of shouting kids complaining they can't see an aye-aye...well if you were quieter you would! *hrumph*

And finally, it appears Marilyn the sloth has had a third baby :)

Aren't the previous two a male white cheeked gibbon and his hybrid son? They could be waiting a long while for them to both die off! Probably better to build the A cheap enclosure somewhere at Whipsnade and bring in a new pair for the expensive new enclosure at London.
Either way i applaud ZSL (for once) for the return of a lost species!!

Presumably Gernot still goes to Mjukuu to suckle though? Effie did not appear to be feeding him almost from the word go, and more recent photos show her breasts look inactive again as a result.

I don't know if its to do with the covered buildings or what but I have noticed visitors at ZSL-particularly school groups, seem worse behaved/noisier than just about anywhere else.

I do still believe it will be Jimmy (northern white-cheeked) and Yoda (Jimmy and a female golden-cheeked gibbon's son) who will come back to occupy it first. They are both of quite an age (Jimmy's been there since the mid 90s, Yoda was born in the late 90s) so I don't think they'll have much longer. Once they do leave my bets for new breeding species will be out of:

- Siamang (Symphalangus syndactylus)
- Golden-cheeked gibbon (Nomascus gabriellae)
- Northern white-cheeked gibbon (Nomascus leucogenys)
- Silvery gibbon (Hylobates moloch)
- Pileated gibbon (Hylobates pileatus)

I very much doubt that it will be lar gibbons (Hylobates lar) or Müller's gibbons (Hylobates muelleri) due to the majority of both these species' European populations being non-subspecific. I also doubt it will be agile gibbons (Hylobates agilis) or southern white-cheeked gibbons (Nomascus siki) due to the size of their European populations (very small). H. muelleri also suffers from this problem.

Hmm. Maybe. Effie seemed very defiant when Mjukuu was pursuing her to reclaim Gernot, and as far as I saw Effie did not at any point return her son to the dominant female :/

That makes Yoda well under 20 years old, which means they could be waiting 10-20plus years, I think there is a gibbon somewhere in the UK that is 50!

They may send Yoda to another zoo once Jimmy dies. I recall that his younger sister (also a hybrid) was sent to Edinburgh and lived/still lives there with their golden-cheeked gibbons (she is/was neutered).

Effie has reclaimed Gernot.
Has Marilyn had another baby, I was at zoo last Friday, nothing mentioned

Lucy, who was born in November 1996, and her daughter Lea, who was born in January 2003, both came from London to Edinburgh in September 2004.

100% certain, she was curled up and as she proceeded to stretch out to lie on her back baby was in full view on her chest :)

Is Lucy the golden-cheeked gibbon then, and Lea the hybrid?

Yes Lucy is the golden-cheeked, or Buff-cheeked as Edinburgh refer to them, they were soon joined by an adult male, Jon, who was born May 2000. He arrived from Ljubljana Zoo, Slovenia in February 2005. Lucy and Jon had a son, called Cheeky, in February 2006, and another son called Lloyd was born 2 May 2010 and another offspring in May 2013, not sure of the sex of the youngest one.

Of the 5 you list, my preferred species would be Golden Cheeked, simply because I prefer it when zoos bring in species which are less common both in the UK and the local area.

Siamangs are the most common of the 5 in the UK, Colchester have Pileated, Paradise Wp have white cheeked & the Aspinalls have Moloch. The only golden-cheeked in the UK are Monkeyworld, Exmoor and Edinburgh, none remotely close to London.

I'm sure someone will say they're not Indonesian, let alone Sumatran, but it didn't matter having African species in Land of the (Asian) Lions!!

If it has to be Sumatran, I hope it's Agile.

The gibbon enclosure plans seem to be a redevelopment of the enclosures behind Tiger Territory that are offshow but visible from Regent Park. Believe they currently house various birds that Animal Adventure have in their displays plus the serval. It will be good to bring what is currently an offshow area back into public access. They will need to rehouse a few of the animal adventure creatures though.

This looks cool! I had assumed that viewing would just be from the elevated tiger walkway but the plans suggest that they will open that pathway next to the perimeter fence as well.
Tiger Territory was always a bit of an anomaly in that it had no supporting cast exhibits. It would be cool if this is the start of some small additions in that area.

Looking at the 3D picture 2 on the plans it looks like Golden cheeked and Lar gibbon to me but I'm new to this so I may be mistaken. I also like the look of the balcony viewing "in" the enclosure.

I doubt it will be lar gibbons, I think they just used that as stock photos. The number of Nomascus pictures makes me believe it will be for Jimmy and Yoda though!

Great news about the Gibbon enclosure, looks similar in design to the lemur one. Looks to me like they're going to open up the back of the tiger viewing galleries so you'll view both from the same place... I'm assuming that path backing on to the park perimeter won't be open to the public...

I think they will actually, the only reason that area was closed until now was because of the show animal enclosures. They can link the path with the end of Tiger Territory (the area by Outback etc), thereby providing another route :)
