Barasingha or Sambar

Can anybody better at ID'ing deer species help me out with this one - I watched more Lion King than Bambi when I was young, which is my way of saying I know far more antelope than deer :p
West Mids do have Sambar in this paddock as well - they are also kept at Port Lympne.

Was this taken at Port Lymne or West Midlands?

Agree with Cyrildacat's I.D.;

Sambar(winter coat) Barasingha(stag, summer coat) Sambar(winter coat), Nilgai.

Sambar are darker brown than Barasingha, only Barasingha has orangey summer pelage.

Yes, not very clear on my part. Both zoos have both together (I'm not sure whcih I thought this was at! :p ).

Never noticed the nilgai in that pic :p

Thanks for clearing that up, I'm happy to go with that. Had a feeling the orange one was barasingha as [in my mind] I see them as bright orange deer [like banteng are bright orange cattle in my mind, although males are black].

Wasn't sure on the females though :)

Can be more confusing in winter when Barasingha are darker brown, similar to Sambar! But very few parks have both...

Assuming Zootierliste is correct, every UK collection that has Sambar also has Barasingha in fact (though not vice versa).

If there is ever a surplus of sambar in zoo's in the UK,are they avaliable to be acquired by private collectors?

Cheers Khakibob

the Blackbuck is the sole species in genus Antilope.

Although according to “Ungulate Taxonomy” (Groves & Grubb; 2011) it is possible that the two sub-species of blackbuck are actually distinct species......

There's nothing like spending the last week reading "Ungulate Taxonomy" for pleasure reading....

Agreed; it is currently my favourite book.

Racking my brain to remember who it was but I certainly remember there being at least one person who called Africans 'Loxodonts' because 'they weren't real elephants'.

Was it Ivan T. Sanderson?

Indeed it was. Ivan T. Sanderson refers to African elephants as “Loxodonts” in his book

"The Dynasty of Abu: A History and Natural History of the Elephants and Their Relatives, Past and Present"
