Bengal Tiger Exhibit

Aug. 4th, 2014.
Those fences do not exactly fill you with confidence do they!

That is interesting as I felt a little eerie when I was walking through the zoo when it first opened. Surprisingly this mediocre little place was busy but I had most of the back section all to myself and the zoo is set near thick forest. Hearing a tiger "chuff" and not knowing exactly where the sound was coming from, and then glancing up at fences that don't seem the most secure in the world, was all a little unnerving.

Yes, looking at your other photos it does seem as though somebody has decided to build their own fences, not only do they all look very similar, in design and material, but they all look rather home-made too!!

The owner does build all his own enclosures with some help from his fiances father or local construction companies. This being said, he tends to build things so that there are back up precautions. You can't see it in the picture but the the fence also has one line of electric fence along the bottom and another 2-3 electric fence lines along the top. Part of the reason there has been the addition to the top is the different changes in Michigan legislature that have been talked about since the Zanesville incident.

At one point there was only an electric fence line near the bottom of the enclosure? That would really have worried me! Speaking of tigers, how did this family-run zoo get Bengal, Amur and Indochinese tigers in its collection?

It can be assumed that these are "Bengal" tigers in that they probably have ancestry that traces back to the subcontinent, but no pedigree to show for it.

This tiger habitat is half an acre with a pond, grass, real trees and rocks. Unlike most city zoos that have fabricated rocks and little natural materials... like most habitats built at this zoo it is built for the animals enjoyment not the visitors. The tigers have room to run swim and a tower to jump, climb, and rest in the sun with a great view of the park. The fencing is 16ft high with interior electric on bottom middle and top which is not required but is added for safety. It also has an 8 foot barrier fence to keep the public back at a safe distance, unlike city zoos that have a 4ft barrier that people can fall in an get hurt... the extra post are there to help support the new post as the cement settles. From your pics and post it is noted that you take pics that can come off only in a negative way and like to post unfounded comments. It is good to ask questions and get the facts but one sided attacks...
