You used it in a humouristic way that changed the meaning of your sentence. Using "way"(which, by the way is not an adjective, but an intensification adverb. I misclassified it, my bad) intensifies and emphasizes the adjective that comes after it. You could say a common hippo is way larger than a pygmy hippo, but an african elephant is just larger than an asian elephat. No intensification accepted in this case.
