Meh, subspecies don't usually do it for me...So Roosevelt Elk, is just an Elk to me. And of all the 56 species of deer or so, and Elk is near the bottom of uniqueness scale to me. And for me uniqueness = exciting. After all Elk are one of the 5 or so species that already live in America, and when I go to a zoo it's nice to see animals from far away continents. I know the Bronx zoo is limited because of weather, and also already has a great deer collection on the Wild Asia Monorail..but I certainly don't miss seeing the Elk.

Well, for most of the public, the "majestic" elk is more impressive than the more esoteric, rare, but rather ungainly Pere David's. And I've rarely ridden the Wild Asia monorail without hearing people complain about being bored seeing "more brown deer."

There is something to be said about an animal's familiarity with the public.

Well of course. This is just the Zoo-nerd inside me talking. And this usually goes against whatever most of the public would prefer..

I've never considered elk boring at any zoo, and would enjoy seeing Tule Elk in LA again. Elk are one of the most beautiful and majestic deer species in my opinion. But I'd also enjoy seeing Pere David's Deer here again as well.
