Bronx Zoo - Giraffe House

July 2008. Too small for the 3-4 giraffes, who must live in it 24-7 during New York's cold winters.
The exhibit looks slanted. I hope it is larger. It reminds me of the National Zoo’s giraffe house. Or at least like the old one. Have they renovated this one yet? Are there off-exhibit areas for the animals? I hope so. How many giraffes are housed here? Do they breed them?

This isn't the exhibit, just the night holding that is on public view.

If you read above comments, you would realize that this is their public night holding (jbnsn99 already pointed that out), there are off-exhibit areas, and that they do breed them when uszoo says "when there is a young calf."

There were two young giraffes when I visited (I included a picture about where you can see the slight differences made to the exhibit like sand flooring). Hey, wasn't there a calf that was expected for April? What happened?

- I had never heard about any pregnant female. I visited today and all of the giraffes were outside and looked normal. There is really no more space for additional giraffes as the barn is pretty full. They should send some away to free up space.

I thought BeardsleyZooFan mentioned it on the news thread a few months ago? I agree, some giraffes need to go. I know they've sent some giraffes to the LEO Zoological Conservation Center in Greenwich, CT, which have since breed once.

They need to ship some of these Giraffes to a Zoo in a better climate that exhibits Baringos. I know the Bronx Zoo has a good rep but this is sad, other zoos would be tore to shreds for keeping Giraffes in this especially the fact they have to spend all winter in it. That is the thing you forget when most of the zoos you visit are Southern, while the weather does get bad the Southern Zoos can at least let most large mammals out a majority of every month (even December January and February)

Again, the floor now has soft sand or dirt on it so the giraffes aren't standing on hard concrete anymore. But I agree. The thing is I believe many of their calves are sent to other zoos once they grow up but what they need to do is start sending some adults off. They also probably need a new male just to keep things more genetically diverse.
