Brown Hyena (Hyaena brunnea) at Port Lympne Wild Animal Park - 22 June 2013

This male is one of 2,1 Brown Hyena held offshow at Port Lympne - the only UK collection to hold the species. Fortunately, myself and my girlfriend were able to arrange access to see this individual thanks to the kindness of the head carnivore keeper at the collection, who was willing to meet with us to that end.

Well done, a fantastic species and exceptionally hard to see in the UK. I concur with Jordan, I too am jealous! :D

Go to Opel, I would thoroughly recommend it. There are a couple of dated bits, but on the whole I thought it was a very nice zoo - and of course brown hyena :D

It is very good that they will do that for people who really want to see them. It makes having them offshow less of an issue for zoo specialists..

Black Footed Cat AND Brown Hyena in one day, some people have all the luck! Noone is more jealous of your visit than me since i saw neither on my recent visit! How did you contact the keeper to get to these?

I phoned the main office up a week or so prior to my visit, mentioned the fact I was travelling down from the north and had an interest in seeing the hyenas, and I was told they would be amenable to sorting something out if the keeper had free time on the day. When I arrived, I mentioned this fact again at the gatehouse, and they got in touch with the keeper and arranged a time for us to be taken from the gatehouse to the offshow hyena enclosure :)

The zoo & the keeper deserve credit for this, although i have stated my reservations on the Aspinall parks due to there anti-zoo stance and other ideas, i can't imagine a lot of other zoos would have been as obliging!
