Brown Hyena (Hyaena brunnea) at Port Lympne Wild Animal Park - 22 June 2013

This male is one of 2,1 Brown Hyena held offshow at Port Lympne - the only UK collection to hold the species. Fortunately, myself and my girlfriend were able to arrange access to see this individual thanks to the kindness of the head carnivore keeper at the collection, who was willing to meet with us to that end.

I spoke to a keeper there and he said they are thinking of sending them out of africa, as part of their new project?

Of course! What else would the JAF do with the only examples of a species in the UK & rare in Europe! If they'd bred loads of them, i might understand it to a degree, but at this stage, i just have to despair of the organisation more than ever!

This is indeed what I was told regarding the young male, but thought it best not to mention in case it was not being openly discussed by keepers. Save your despair though - the reason they are doing this is because they offered the young male to several collections in the UK and nowhere wanted to go into the species!

I was told, however, that the ageing breeding pair is intended to live out their days at Port Lympne.

Brown Hyenas would be lovely at Whipsnade, or Paignton, or Marwell. The iron hand of species collection planning dictates otherwise, however. To be fair, hyenas have been pretty uncommon in UK zoos throughout my lifetime.

I am now 50, and I have only seen Aardwolves at Hamerton and RSCC; Striped Hyena at Port Lympne, Kessingland and Twycross; and Spotted only at Colchester. I have only ever seen Brown Hyena at Port Lympne.

I've never seen brown hyena! All i can say is shame on the zoos that turned them down! What's wrong with the people running these zoos?! I agree with your suggested locations, but there could be 20+ possibilities, what a waste! Wake up ZSL, Marwell etc

@IanRRobinson Which is unusual considering the population of African Wild Dogs have exploded in the last 20 or so years.

Sadly, if anybody wants to see a Brown Hyena now they must go all the way to Prague!
