Found in garden ID please?

While digging down about 2ft I came across this beautiful thing did put it back after refilling he area while building a new wall.

I am totally useless at naming species other than birds so any help would be great.

Adding a few more images to help.

it's a grass grub, which is a larva of a beetle. They feed on the grass roots and kill your lawn.

(New Zealand perspective obviously - English people feel free to correct!)

I just quickly googled that - the NZ grass grub is an endemic species (Costelytra zealandica) so it won't be that one of course.

But I'm pretty sure it is whatever the English equivalent of a grass-killing native scarab larva is.

It looks like something I dug up in my garden. I thought it was a Stag Beetle larva. It was about 3" long.

Definitely beetle larvae, what beetle would depend on size, if it is large most likely a stag beetle as above :)

Stag beetle larva don't live in just soil as they feed on dead/rotten wood, so unless it was in a buried tree stump it is most likely a grub of the cock chaffer or summer chaffer if it was very thin it is most likely the larva of the swift moth, they also move backwards very fast if disturbed. Of course it could be a lesser stag beetle larva, but again they feed on dead/rotten wood.

It was found about 2ft under the ground but after looking again tonight it was in an area were their used to be a lawn and after being under the 2ft of soil the lawn had rotted away and the ground consists of fine rubble, clay and composted soils with rotted lawn and other roots if that helps.
