Where they live now used to contain their pair of Black Rhinos would you believe- they even produced 5 calves in here too. Of course both inside and outside areas has been extensively remodelled for the hippos since, but the public viewing area inside remains the same.
This is the current hippo house (unfortunately). We recently had to euthainaise Lise the female due to rapidly declining health and last week a new female arrived from Marwell. The hippo enclosure is one of the oldest and poorest at Bristol although over the previous years, the outside enclosure has been extended to give extra space.
My colleague pointed out to me that in the back of the photo, Mike Weston, a keeper who served over 30 years and retired last year can be seen with his broom by the hippo dens. That raised a smile with us.
