If my memory seves me right, Bristol formerly kept Pygmy Hippos in a converted greenhouse up behind the Reptile House? This was before they moved into the existing House.
I find it interesting that the aquarium was a bear pit, with the climbing pole just outside by the aquarium entrance. I used to have a book by Johnny Morris about the history of BZG, thought it was fascinating. Does anyone know what it was called? I think mine got lost whilst moving house
Have never seen this book by Johnny Morris, but I have several others on BZG history and many guidebooks etc. if anyone knows the name of the Johnny Morris book, please let me know. I;d love a copy!
The bear pit was circular and in the centre of the Aquarium building- I don't know what it is now. There were cages around the South side of the Aquarium which connected into it. I remember Sloth Bears and Wolves being kept in these.
