Islands: Lazy River cruise boats

The front boat has passed one of the barless orang enclosures. The second one is passing the wired orang enclosure. Note part of the Monsoon House with ventilators open at the back. Chester, 10th July 2015.

What will you see from the boats besides the orangutans?

Are there any animals or exhibit features that can only be seen from the boats?

it's funny how the woman in the second row is taking a photo of you taking a photo of her.

I assume the boats have canopies which can be attached for when it rains?

I hope the Orangs can use the space above the artificial trees. There's so much of it.

My very first thought also.;) Over half of the total height of the enclosure looks like they have nothing to climb- but they aren't in there yet so we'll see- got to give them a chance to complete it all.

I also wonder how they will contain e.g. Orangutans on the open areas, from 'accessing' the boats, I imagine hotwire will still play a role in keeping them away from the water edge.

Yes indeed. At the moment just the warty pigs, photos are in the Gallery. See the Islands thread for a list of the other enclosures that the boat passes.

I expect there will be webbing straps hanging from the roof, with hammocks, as in RotRA. I do hope that they will also continue the practice of scatter-feeding on the wire roof, like Howletts do with gorillas. I think that orangs benefit greatly from being fed in this way.

It never rains on the Wirral because it is the rain shadow of Snowdonia
I have heard a story that there were originally canopies on the boats, but they made these frail craft so unstable that they had to be removed.

It looks like the open enclosure in the foreground has a sunken wall.

I expect they'll hang something from the roof but they maybe will go for a more naturalistic look than fire hoses?
If they do use scatter feeding on the roof they'll have to use drones to get the food up there!

As far as I could see no hot wires will be used. There is a large drop at the front of the open enclosure and very high walls around the rest (same idea as the current orang enclosure with the waterfall). There was a lot of planting in the netted exhibit which seems unlikely to stand the test of time once the orange get in!! The fake tree has lots of 'loops' attached from which they will attach the hose/ fake vines from. There are also quite a few away poles - which I actually saw the orangs using in their current enclosure - so think that will be exciting to see.

I thought the waterfall enclosure was moated at the front. Is there a concealed wall?
(it's been a few years since I saw it)
