It looks like a box. I'm quite disappointed at the design, was it just me that was under the misconception it was going to be a 'forest'? I like the zoo but this has colchester written all over it.

Looking a second time. With the decking, netting, pond, gravel and rocks, do you reckon Colchester Zoo visited their local garden centre to furnish this exhibit?

To be honest, I don't give a monkeys (no pun intended) whether the orangs prefer it to the wild or not. It's a shoddy piece of design and whoever landscaped it should hang their head in shame!

i would like to point out to zoos everywhere: extensive use of artificial rock does not look good. simple

I think that apart from the fact that is one of the ugliest new enclosures I`ve ever seen, the 2 worst points are 1) very limited climbing/hiding opportunities and 2) that the apes are "immured". They can`t wantch what happens around them unless they climb on the higest podest and watch on mock rock walls all day. Most animals do far better when they can watch out of their enclosure, be it through a fence or over a moat, but this being confimed by 4 high concrete walls is awful for any intelligent animal that takes part in what happens in the world around it.

What a waste of money, and a lost chance to give the orangs a really good environment.

I agree if the orangs like it we cant complain

Judging from a post on the Colchester Orangutan Forest thread, Rajang has given it the thumbs down and is spending most of his time indoors.

I think this exhibit looks really nice, I think the climbing frames are good and the rocks give it a nice touch. And the orang-utans probably enjoy it much more than your eyes do.

Given the overall look and style, and given that the rocks probably do nothing for the orangs, how does one justify them? Or the expense?
Many here object to theming that is just for the visitors, but these rocks do nothing for anyone

Those rocks don't really look like they were much of an expense...
