fishing cat exhibit

April 28, 2013. The one photo friendly small cat exhibit in the park. Other remaining small cat exhibits were a letdown (set back 20 feet from guardrail). One entire section of exhibits labelled small cats on the map have been demolished and replaced with a rope challenge course! Compared to my previous two trips to Port Lympne (which I like a lot), Howletts is a huge disappointment and I would never step foot in there again.

Interesting that your opinion is the reverse of almost everyone who has been to Port Lympne since the changes; have you yourself visited since that time?

By the by, did you miss the African wildcat enclosures? If I recall correctly, they are pretty near to the guardrail, as are the Indian Desert Cat enclosures - were either of these the demolished ones?

There are a pair of exhibits near the cafe for african wildcat and ocelot that are near the rail. The wildcat was asleep but would have made a good photo if it had been up. The ocelot exhibit was too small, even though he was active, to get a shot without fence or hut in the background. There are no longer any indian desert cats at Howletts.

The Howletts map is always hopelessly out of date! There was a small fishing cat cage roughly at the entrance to the rope course on my first visit 6 years ago, but dont remember anything else in that area. The cage was out of use on later visits & the rope course must have been there at least 3 years. I've never seen a siamang or malayan tapir at howletts in 6 years(5 visits), but they were both still on the map last year!

Whilst i preferred PL before the changes, i would still say after visiting last month that it is better than Howletts. Apart from the Ratel & N Chinese leopard, i can't think of many rarities Howletts has that PL doesn't also have, whilst i'm sure PL has several more!
I will be interested on your opinion of PL, as a 'neutral' not swayed by what has been lost.

African Wildcat is the other major Howletts-specific rarity.

Talking of rarities at PL, I'll be wanting as many fingers crossed by fellow Zoochatters as possible to aid in my plans to attempt to request viewing access to the hyenas at PL, of course :p

Thanks, i forgot about them, there's also Hecks Macaque & a couple of other monkey species to be fair.
Good luck with the hyena, i had to skip the truck ride as i only had 4 hours so have yet to see them at all.
