The entire Raccoon Dog enclosure at Ponderosa Rare Breeds Farm, 16/10/2011.
Looks tiny and inadequate as hell, only a couple of steps up from a fur farm! Is that what they're trying to get across?
Seriously though, how many animals are kept in here, (hopefully one?) and are there any redeeming features to this cage?

Having looked at their website, I can see and admire what the owners are trying to do here. But if they really can't afford better animal accommodation they'd surely be better off just keeping domestics...

I think it's a shame to keep an animal which, whilst not being rare in the wild, but unusual to see in this country in a cage like this. I can't see any cover or enrichment at all. I tend to find myself agreeing that they should really be concentrating on domestics until finances are in place to improve their collection!

I'm not sure how many Raccoon Dogs Ponderosa is in possession of as I saw none on my visit and their website is way out of date and does not list a lot of their collection. As for redeeming features, I can't say there were any!

I noticed the website was a bt naff as well! :)
I didn't think there'd be anything to crow about with this exhibit, shame really as it's quite an uncommon species!

How does a place like this get ahold of animals like raccoon dogs, tapir, and meerkats? Are there a lot of surplus animals of these species floating around Europe that anybody can buy and put on display?

@Mr. Weasel: I LOVE your avatar. Did you make it with Photoshop?

Meerkats and lowland tapirs are fairly common in the UK, let alone Europe. The former tend to pop up at nearly every collection over here to be fair. Raccoon dogs aren't as common but I imagine that in places like Russia and Eastern Europe they pop up quite a lot.
Regarding meerkats, certain pet shops and animal breeders seem to be selling them now as well. Are they not that common in the US?

Thanks for the info Brum. Meerkats are common in US zoos, but I have never heard of pet shops breeding or selling them. I'm sure that would be illegal here in California, but perhaps there are some places like Texas where it would be happening. There are some states where there are very few regulations on what you can breed or keep as a pet.

I think meerkats will be quite acceptable in some States considering how many dangerous animals are kept in peoples backyards and garages etc etc.
From what people have said on here, this place has most of the animals for sale:- Wickid Pets Animal Adventure Gallery
You may have seen photo's but not realised it was a pet shop as well, I certainly didn't! :)
