'White' form South African Lions (Panthera leo krugeri). There are stacks of these strange animals now - and ironically they're the only African Lions of known-subspecies origin in the UK...

I wonder if West Mids know how contraception works ;)
Maybe they should try it with their males they may find it stops the breeding! But then again more White Lion cubs means more visitors which means more money so its the Zoo gaining money not giving any thought on how this could affect the lions. :(
Its such a shame if this Safari Park was looked after by somone who knew what they where doing and who cared about the animals maybe none of this mess with the 'White' Animals would of happened.
Didnt mean to affend any West Mids Supporters!
Regards

I have been there several times and still thought 'oh they have water behind them don't remember that' :)

I have just booked a small zoo tour for July so will be going to West Midlands - hope the lions don't look as crowded as they do in the photo!

This is a little unfair to say it should be looked after by someone who knows what they are doing, both Bob Lawrence (the boss) and Angela Potter (deputy) do a fine job, I suggest you look online to see the work they do in Namibia as well as the good work they do at the park (Angela hand rears many animals at home if they are rejected by the parents, this doesn't sound like people who don't know what they are doing.

I know 'white animals' arn't to everyones taste but the above quote is off the mark IMHO.

I didnt quite mean to say anything against the owners im sure they are fine people who have good ideas but its the 'White Aspect' and the breeding that i think should have something done about it.
I have huge respect for people who hand-rear animals and one day i would love to myself, but of course it is the last option.
Surely they may know what this breeding of the Whites is doing to the gene pool? and all the aspects of pride life etc.Whites where a brilliant idea but the breeding has gone too over the top now.
Again in this post i do not want to affend anyone,Regards

Riziki,
No offence taken. It was just the way you worded it the first time which wasn't a good reflection on the staff of WMSP but the points you raised in your reply are valid and make good sense, but hopefully they do know what they are doing with the gene pool.

I doubt severe inbreeding has taken place yet. Surely the adult male of the pride wouldn't allow his sons to mate with his females. But your right inbreeding is going to be inevitable aswell as overcrowding and once the young males in the pride reach adulthood theres almost definatly goin to be some serious fighting. I hope the park has thought of all this and has some good ideas for the future of their white lions. Hopefully some of them are going to find good new homes elsewhere, unlikely to be anywhere in the UK though.

It has taken place, one of the younger males got mature, didn't get rehomed and rotated the enclosure with big male. As a result he bred with all the females, including his close relatives. I'm sure this has happened a few times, I mean there's 20 odd of them from 1.4 founders.
EDIT: It was actually either 2.2 or 1.3 founders.

Seriously! Has this been proven? Cos its very disturbing if the staff have allowed this to happen. It must be under some act of animal cruelty or negelagence to allow close relatives to breed when there is absoluteley no need for it. Even if they wanted more white cubs they could have least just kept their original breeding founders going without letting the offspring breed with each other!...
