Then it does seem strange that it has such a large water area and it looks like it was built way earlier then '76. Melbourne Zoos Lion Park was built before then and is still quite a modern exhibit.

London Zoo exhibits have a knack of ageing quite rapidly!!
I think it could easily be modernised effectively as they have done this very well with some other ZSL exhibits recently. It is crying out for a major facelift and becuse they have not done so apart from a bit of 'cosmetics' indicates to me they just haven't got the money at present.
Yes i have always thought they would be better draining the moat and creating a haa haa with high retaining wall (obviously!), this would almost double the footprint of the enclosure. At least they are attempting to improve the enclosure, problem is all improvements are to the aethetics as opposed to solidly improving the area for the animals. Wonder how long that lovely new turf will last!
When I visited I found the whole cat terraces area rather confusing and dated. On my visit it seemed one of the oldest areas, with a jumble of enclosure and viewing areas for monkeys, birds and big cats. I really didn't know where to go or look.
