Bronx Zoo - Jungle World

July 2008. Black leopard.
It's a very nice exhibit, but too small for a couple of leopards.

Very Nice exhibit. The leopards look right at home and probably enjoy the soft vegetation to walk on instead of bare concrete. Much nicer than the Cat Complex in Omaha, or the Primate, Cat, & Aquatics building in Cleveland.

I don't know about that. I've seen the leopards at least 15 times this year and still haven't seen them so much as budge a paw. The snow leopard exhibit at the zoo is easily a size and a half bigger than this one and better kept. Most of the time the glass on the exhibit is so dirty I don't even want to look at the magnificent cats behind it.

I know we all like the figure out how animals feel sometimes (and are surely all wrong a lot) but I genuinely feel that if these leopards can talk they'd be screaming "I'm bored. It's small here. Give me a ball!"

I would think one of the largest best snow leopard exhibits in the United States is much larger than two times the size of this. If the snow leopard exhibit is only 2-3 times bigger than this than I don't know how it is so highly regarded. It is much bigger than just 2-3 of these glass cages.

The Snow Leopard exhibit at the BZ is a. outdoors (not much glass to be seen) and features one large viewing area (with the equivalent to 3 or 4 'panes of glass') and another large viewing area with two glass cut-outs to see the leopards. They do a large amount of roaming and have plenty of nooks and crannies to hide and attack things in.

I wouldn't put the BZ snow leopard exhibit as too high on the list of US snow leopard exhibits--I'd say it's just above average. Never heard too much acclaim about it either though.

The BZ snow leopard exhibit is not only the best in the US, it is one of the best zoo exhibits anywhere. There are actually 3 separate spaces--two of which are viewed through "harp wire," one of which is viewed through glass. The latter is a small, sheltered space intended for a female cat with young cubs. Connected to these are subtly-brilliant exhibits for pheasants, red pandas and cranes, completing the "Himalayan Highlands" concept

It won the AZA exhibit award in 1987, and was essentially copied note-for-note by the Zurich zoo (although they improved on the Bronx by having their exhibit open to the sky, not mesh-enclosed). The exhibit sightlines, plantings, cultural architecture, graphics and rockwork are all first rate. At 20 years and counting, it qualifies as one of the most influential and successful zoo exhibits ever built.

More snow leopards have been born at the Bronx than in any other US zoo.

Please tell me, if Bronx is just average, what zoos have great snow leopard exhibits?

I don't belive that a black leopard cares how "good" and "natural" he looks in his exhibit!

This has to be an example of how bad a zoo enclosure can be from the view of the leopard! It is just to small!! No real fresh air! Exactly what enrichment is provided here?

I see this as the deception of the public! probably worse still the deception of the BZ into thinking it is acceptable to build this kind of exhibit!

Reduakari, finally something we agree on! Himalayan Highlands is the best Snow Leopard exhibit from what I have seen and I think it is a top-notch enclosure.
