Kea Exhibit

That seems a little small for a kea. What is your opinion of this exhibit Fossa dude? The only thing I can use for scale is the galah in the bottom left corner.

That looks like a Major Mitchell cockatoo which are bigger than a galah so it would be even smaller. I was wondering how deep this exhibit it. It does look pretty small.

speaking as a New Zealander, that is an appalling cage for a kea! There may be some perspective issues that make the cage appear much much smaller than it really is but I doubt it, given the Major Mitchell's cockatoo on the right for scale. Just sad.

Not sure whether I would like to be a parrot behind glass; wire offers a perching/climbing/play surface. Keas like to 'do things' [jangle a bunch of keys at a Kea & you'll see what I mean] and I wonder if the exhibit furniture here makes up for [to a parrot] rather sterile wall surfaces? On the other hand, they may get lots of keeper interaction and frequent changes of cage furniture.........

Where exactly IS the Cockatoo in this picture? Or the Kea, come to that?

The pink cockatoo is in the bottom corner of the exhibit to the right at the bottom right hand corner of the photo. In the kea tank is a green blob towards the left hand side that I can't explain and just assumed was the kea. :)

It does look like it might be possibly deeper than it appears, a bit of an optical illusion going perhaps. I honestly don't remember this building much from my visit over 10 years ago.

that's what I thought might be going on, but that's definitely the kea at the back left right next to the back wall (its sitting with its body facing to the right but with its head turned round to the left so its beak is resting on its back). A kea would be bored witless in this cage :(

@ everyone - Sadly it is not deeper, no outdoor access, and is very small. I'm not familiar with this species so I could not say if this is that great of an exhibit. Denver will be adding a larger extension to bird world so hopefully an outdoor Kea exhibit would be made. There is also 2 of them and this exhibit used to home yellow crested cockatoo.

Thank you for wondering everyone

This is a shocking enclosure for Kea, even if it is only one bird. A decent-sized outdoor aviary shouldn't be too difficult for a mainstream zoo to construct.
