why zoos should not have free days

After a couple hours, our zoo director had to stand out front and turn people away. Free day was sponsored by Tucson Unified School District, which had tables and demonstrations set up all over. October 9, 2010.

Last month I was in Texas and got the warning from jbnbsn99 that the Saturday of my time in the Dallas-Fort Worth area would be a half-price day at Dallas Zoo, so I should avoid going there on that day. Instead I went the following Monday and had it almost for myself (on the Saturday I went to Cameron Park Zoo in Waco and Capital of Texas Zoo in Austin and found them both easy to visit despite there being a weekend)

I support free and half-price days as then anyone can visit and have a nice day out despite the financial situation. The problem is of course the overcrowding. If members would avoid those days, it would make the situation much better, they can come any time anyways.

Quite an impressive list actually:

Bronx Zoo (2 days)
Central Park Zoo
Queens Zoo
Prospect Park Zoo
New York Aquarium
Staten Island Zoo
Philadelphia Zoo
Baltimore Zoo
National Aquarium in Baltimore
National Zoo

Gladys Porter Zoo
Houston Zoo
San Antonio Zoo
Dallas Zoo
Fort Worth Zoo
Capital of Texas Zoo
Cameron Park Zoo
Caldwell Zoo
Dallas World Aquarium
Oklahoma City Zoo

Denver Zoo
Cheyenne Mountain Zoo

St Louis Zoo
Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo (2 days)
St Paul's Como Zoo
Minnesota Zoo

Currently I'm in the process of selecting photos for Zoochat (I'll only upload the very best)

I can't wait for your photos of the Queens Zoo, CMZ, and the Henry Doorly Zoo photos the most Baldur! If you ever come to Florida, make sure to stop by the Jacksonville Zoo :)

I sure will; Jacksonville is high on my list, need to see that famous Jaguar exhibit of theirs. The Southeast would probably be next on my list for parts of the US to visit.

I suggest for you to come to Jacksonville in the Spring, that is when the gardens are in full bloom! The gardens are quite beautiful and imo they are the 3rd best thing about the zoo(after Africa and ROJ).

Nice list! Cannot wait to see your pics from Omaha, St Louis, CMZ, National Zoo, National Aquarium, and Philadelphia Zoo. Too bad you didn't make it to Kansas City or Sedgwick County (both great zoos). Maybe next time!

Kansas City Zoo was an option but was cut out because of money and time restrictions. Sedgwick County Zoo is supposed to be a zoo gem but virtually impossible to get to by public transportation, so I took it out. Whichita even seemed hard (or at least time-consuming) to get to by Greyhound from either Kansas City or St Louis.

Let me make the comparison. This August I visited the Louvre & despite its vast size, in many rooms it was actually not possible to even view the paintings ; they were literally blocked off from view by the masses-tens of thousands-of visitors.Terribly unpleasant & anything but culturally-inspiring.On the other hand, the much-less known Renoir museum was a luxurious experience , completely relaxing & inspiring.A zoos with this density of visitors is just awful for everybody - visitors, animals & staff alike.A complete nightmare.Perhaps some people need to sit down quietly & have a re-think about policy for 2011.
