Pangolin Building

Malayan pangolin (first two windows), thick-spined porcupine (second window) and a squirrel monkey (third window). I didn’t see the advertised loris.

just one squirrel monkey left now?! The poor porcupines, too, being moved to these awful cages.

When I first visited (2009) these four cages held, in order, tarsier, brown capuchin, ring-tailed lemur, and slow loris. In 2014 they held leopard cat, masked palm civet, pangolins, and slow loris.

The squirrel monkeys were originally held in a big cage near the entrance, then (along with the porcupines) in the cage which now holds binturong, and now in this cage.

Only one squirrel monkey as far as I could see. As you say, it's unsuitable in just about every respect and one of the low-points of the zoo. Is the cage beside the entrance still there?

the cage near the entrance is the really big one right before you get to the row of parrot aviaries. Originally I think it had hornbills, in 2009 it had the squirrel monkeys, in 2014 it had a mix of larger birds including macaws and hornbills, as well as a couple of tortoises.

Yes, of course. It now holds two pairs of hornbills.

Somewhat different line up when I visited in Jan 2016.

Working from left to right:
#1 Solitary Malayan Pangolin.
#2 Pair of Prevost's Squirrels (I think).
#3 Solitary Squirrel Monkey.

The second exhibit was signed for Masked Palm Civet, but these were not visible (and I don't think they were in there).

The Thick-spined Porcupines were in with the Proboscis Monkeys.

quick question: both of you seem to only mention three cages in this row (unless I'm misinterpreting your posts) - has the fourth one been removed/blocked off/combined?

If they are Prevost's squirrels they should be glossy black with a red belly (the colouration of the local pluto subspecies).

Ah, my photos don't give a good overview of this area. If there were four exhibits, then they would have been for pangolin, civet (signed but unseen), squirrels (unsigned) and squirrel monkey. I'm not 100% sure of the order then either, although the monkey was at the end.

The squirrels were on the mesh so the photos are more or less silhouettes. But they must have been Prevost's.

this zoo does unfortunately seem to cycle through its smaller inhabitants quite regularly.

Now you've said that, I think there was another cage with a sleeping civet (presumably the masked palm civet). I believe the order was:

1) Pangolin and (labelled only) slow loris.
2) Civet.
3) Pangolin and porcupine.
4) Squirrel monkey.

The species turnover in this house is fairly remarkable.

PS. I saw wild pluto on the grounds, but none captive.
