@Jambo It’s scary how close we came to crisis point with Petre into her senior years before the initiative was taken to breed from her. They can produce a calf at least every 18-24 months, yet females like Janice only ever bred once.
Other photos too, just phone being difficult so might have to load tomorrow.
I recognised the name Fergus from reading on here but if had seen before he came from Cairns as-well as his brother Felix, had forgotten.
Want to focus on the positives of course, but in relation to Cairns and Hippos there are two things that wish had gone differently:
1. Wish the River Hippos had all stayed in Australia and not been exported to the safari parks in Indonesia (I say too because believe Indonesia could have sourced Hippos elsewhere anyway).
2. Wish the unfortunate fated Pygmy Hippo who escaped Tipperary had not alluded being re-found until she/he was met with a hunter's rifle in the Northern Territory outback, as that individual could very well be alive and well today somewhere at a zoo in our region.
1. Yes, Solucky (1987) and her son, Tippi (2004) were a big loss to the region. Solucky being the most genetically valuable female in the region and Tippi being a bull.
2. Agreed. She was a female and we don’t exactly have a surplus of them right now.
