1. Its such a shame, thats really interesting about 0.1 Solucky, wish she could of stayed and could be at Dubbo or Werribee right now, and sounds like 1.0 Tippi would be a good individual to have in the region still too considering in loose terms: 'we need all the River Hippos we can'
2. Poor thing 0.1 made me so sad for her (thanks for reminding me she was a she).
The thing with today that couldnt help feeling was that Pygmy Hippos should be on the 'top ten exotic mammals species with an imperative guaranteed future at Taronga' list with the rapidly dwindling species number (I know you are one of the top people in knowing the depth of their historical legacy at the zoo) and that eventually I believe Taronga should be looking at new exhibit habitats for them with more 'leg-room' (to be fair though I don't think they are in terrible conditions at the moment at all, I just mean there inevitably will be another masterplan on the horizon and they hopefully will have something in the works, in present I believe they suit the Rainforest Trail very well considering Malayan Tapirs are no longer a return option).
@steveroberts Solucky was the only surviving daughter of Snorkel, who in turn was the only surviving daughter of Nada. Solucky’s daughter, Cuddles, is genetically valuable too - but descends from Bonnie/Faith on her paternal side, with Bonnie being related to the Taronga hippos.
@steveroberts Re. Historical significance. I’ve just looked back on records and Taronga has held Pygmy hippopotamus since 1952! The first was a female named Sneezy, who went on to produce 10 calves at Taronga. Her line ended 60 years later in 2012, with the death of her grandaughter.
Thanks for researchings, thats heaps interesting. Its a cool legacy hey. In your opinion do you think too perhaps that Taronga's future should be one that includes a home for Pygmy Hippos?
