The female walrus Neyeska in the news Eismeer at Hagenbeck, Hamburg

Hello. Name of this walrus is "Neseyka" or "Neseika" (not "Neyeska"), that means "junior" in Nenets language. People of this nationality live on the peninsula of Yamal where Neseyka arrived from. ;)

Did you catch the moment when she is yawning?

Thanks for pointing out my Typo :)
She was making faces to the visiors :)

Really?! She was a most "poker-faced" walrus in our zoo, and opened her mouth only when she is eating or yawning :D I've heard her voice only once.

Maybe she'll become a real actress in Tierpark Hagenbeck.
New "Eismeer" is amazing.

Do you still keep walrus?

She is now friends with a grey seal here, much fun to see them play :)

Do you still keep walrus?

Yes, our zoo houses two walruses now: Enurmin (male) and Eva (female). They are seven years old.

We were afraid that Neseyka may pursue and even injure her new neighbours because she is a walrus, and walruses are usually not so delicate and careful as other may want. But she appeared much cleverer... than us :)

So ist there any return date for her to russia?

Neseyka is the atlantic walrus, this subspecies is included to Red List of threatened animals of Russia. There is a law that threatened animals may be moved to another country only for a one year. But as far as I know the whole time of Neseyka's visit to Germany is about two years so you'll have enough time.

Are you sure she is Odobenus rosmarus rosmarus? In press it was said she was Odobenus rosmarus divergens.

The law seems weird to be honest.

Well, we didn't do genetic tests or something like that, but peninsula of Yamal and Kara sea (where Neseyka arrived from) are in limits of area of O.r. rosmarus. Area of O.r. divergens is at a great distance to the east from this place. So Neseyka belongs to subspecies O.r. rosmarus until another information is proved.

UPDATE. This is the photo of Neseyka's veterinary certificate (sorry for it's quality).

By the way: I 've seen videos and read some articles in German and found many divergences :). For instance Neseyka's weight is specified from 550 (correct or almost correct) to 800 (!) kg.
When people speak Neseyka's name they pronounce letter (sound) "S" as in German word "See" despite of it should be pronounced as in English word "see" :)
But Germans thought out interesting short name: "Nessi". In Russian we have another rules to make short and tender names, and Loch Ness is too far from us - so this version missed us.

The law seems weird to be honest.

I think it's not a weird law, only my English is weird :)
I meant that it is posible that animal will live in another country more than one year but mass of papers is valid only for a year. It was hard to make Neseyka's trip real, and it took a lot of time (several months - and not least because of she is a red-listed animal). Serious problem with papers next time may cause animal's return back until everything is good (extremely bad scenario), but I think everything will be fine.

Note: I'm not a lawyer, and I just tell you what I was told about this case.
