the enclosure that now houses the Persian gazelles had marsh deer (Blastocerus dichotomus). I wish those were still in the collection.....

I believe they are very difficult to keep in captivity? Seem to remember a a photo of one being bottle or foster-raised so they evidently bred them at one stage.
 
I think that Berlin, left to itself, is rather boggy. I was in Berlin in September 1997 and remember noting just how much water there was in the numerous building sites as the city geared up to regaining capital city status in 1999 following re-unification.

I know the city is surrounded by a lot of inland lakes, an important source of recreation for the city and some are used as inland beaches. But I think the substrate may be very sandy anyway as some of the other Berlin enclosures-e.g. the rhinos, are comprised of sandy soil too.

Interestingly, South American marsh deer were one of the species kept by the Duke of Bedford in the Deer Park at Woburn; a photograph of one, taken by the Duchess of Bedford, is reproduced in “Living Animals of the World” (circa 1902).
