Elephant Odyssey - Opening Day

It is finally open, today we got to see the $45 million Elephant Odyssey exhibit at the San Diego Zoo.
I think it is, but only on some of them. The acacia trees would still need time to grow before they could be eating them.

Just because you don't like the exhibit and think it's disappointing, doesn't mean others will.

Wow, there's no arguing against logic like this...

@BlackRhino: I just found your comment to be very unnessecary. That some people will like this exhibit while others will dislike it is a given! dragon(ele)nerd was simply sharing his opinion while reduakari was sharing his. I don't think he expected everyone to simply agree with him.

I did not want to start a big discussion here so let's just avoid spamming the thread further :)

Sorry. If this is a "masterpiece" then we've agreed to set the bar VERY low.
It's just such a mixed bag--why bother with artificial "rocks" and "dirtbanks" that along with looking totally fake are stuck next to all the steel and concrete buildings. No vegetation, massive brutal architecture, cartoonish "prehistoric" creatures, vertical aviaries for ground-level birds....the list of strange decisions goes on and on. This will not stand the test of time, as poinnted out by Snowleopard

Yes, it will stand the test of time when the aging elephants will remain healthy into their 40's, 50's and 60's because they were kept active. All too many times what can happen is animals stand around waiting for their next meal no matter how realistic, large, and perfect an elephant enclosure is. Yeah, it's not the best looking exhibit at all, your right, but the ugliness is balanced out by how benefiting the enclosure is to the elephants.

The entire exhibit cost around 45 million. Let's not forget how expensive construction cost can be in Southern California.

Holy crap! That more than ours in Copenhagen!

About it standing the test of time, we shall see. However this is far below what I expect from a zoo like San Diego.

And since when was it not possible for a naturalistic enclosure to also be functional?
