On the day of my visit one of the yards was being cleaned out by keepers and so most of the elephants were packed into the second yard. From what I've heard there are now 5.5 acres at the disposal of the animals, and with 17 elephants the herd is quite a sight to behold. Also, the park has had 8 elephants born in the past decade and so there are plenty of youngsters around.
A wide hydraulic gate was installed in between the Asian and African enclosures near the African pool. It's is pretty simple actually, no major changes were made.

Not that I have heard, but that does not mean it never happened. As you may recall a wild white tail deer jumped into the lion enclosure at the Smithsonian National Zoo a couple years ago. When I was there (before that incident) they told me deer had also gotten into the cheetah enclosure.
Back to the San Diego Safari Park, they had the opposite experience several years ago. Instead of a wild ungulate jumping into the big cat exhibit, they had a wild big cat (mountain lion) get into the large field exhibit with a virtual smorgasbord of ungulates. The staff person that told me this did not say whether or not the mountain lion caught anything before they captured it. At my zoo (Reid Park, Tucson) we had a wild bobcat get in several years ago and kill a black swan before it was captured.
