elephant trail construction

She's older than 60. I am surprised she is still living. Can someone tell me what is this exhibit going to be other than an extra yard, a barn addition, and a walking trail? Yards 1 and 2 are on the same exact footprint as the old yard, so how is this going to be a big improvement. How is it going it going to be 3.5 acres when the old exhibit was less than an acre. If you look at the plans it doesn't look like much more than the old exhibit.

They are adding a third yard and I'm sure that they will be enlarging the old yards.

Here is the site plan for the people that have not seen it: Elephant Trails Site Plan - National Zoo| FONZ

The plans are not that impressive at all compared to the exhibits being built in Dallas, LA, Cleveland, OKC and Denver.

ambika has suffered a few blood clots over the years, many times have staff feared for her life. From the pictures I've seen though she looks in good health.
Does anyone know if Shanthi is pregnant? or do we still have to hang tight for the mean time?

Am I the only one who fails to see why it will take 2 more years to complete this exhibit?

I think anything is better than there current home (which wasn't actually that terrible)

No, Shanti is once again, not pregnant :(

I think she migth just be to old at the point and they should just cease AI with her

How old is she? Ellie from St. Louis gave birth to Maliha at 35 years old, but with AI it is probably much more difficult to get an elephant pregnant.

Shanthi is about 34. Shanthi has given birth twice before to Kumari and Kandula so she could still be fertile. Ellie had given birth to Rani 10 years before Maliha.
But of course like you said, AI is hard with elephants and even harder they aren't in around peak fertile age.

i'm guessing the long construction period is due to the fact that the washington climate dictates work only over the warmer months?

which wouldn't have been the case in san diego?
