I thought the area behind the Mappins- now the Hospital/Admin buildings etc was the site of Monkey Hill? Perhaps there were other buildings also.

Incidentally, further to our previous discussions on the origin of the Asian female 'Lakshmi', I think this is her as this is still a youngish elephant and so not 'Rusty' the older female.

The three Elephants from here that transferred into the Casson being 'Dicksie'(African) and 'Rusty' and 'Lakshmi'(Asian).

Indeed, Monkey Hill was behind the Mappin Terraces, but there were other buildings there too.

And a fourth, the African elephant “Toto”.

i have map saved somewhere on my laptop which states african elephants lived behind the mappins, next to monkey hill?, i will have to look:)

Its quite difficult to date this one, the latest date it reffers to is 1943 (''The lion 'rota' was presented in 1943 by the zoo to Mr Churchill'') I think it probably is from the late 40s to the mid 50s ? When did Rota die ?

Scrap that this is post 1958, it says they have pandas.

It is possible that between those dates they brought together the two species if they were only holding one african elephant ?
