Fort Worth Zoo - Asian Elephant Paddock

August 2008. Terribly small and barren elephant yard, which had a huge pool that was unfortunately totally empty.

That is a brilliant map!:) How long did it take to do? I still can't believe that with all of the yards for the elephants the entire area (including the barn) is one acre. That is disappointing, and I'm sure that the zoo is aware of its deficiencies.

Honestly it only took about 10 minutes. I'm actually a bit shocked at how small it really is. I don't know where Fort Worth Comes up with their 4.5 acre claim.

With a main yard being only 18,000 sq. ft., I wonder how many zoos in the United States actually have smaller elephant paddocks visible to the public? Why didn't this zoo make the IDA's top 10 worst list? No elephant deaths?:p

Not this year. Last year they lost a mother and an unborn calf from a ruptured uterus.

I would say the worst aspect of this enclosure is how damn barren it is. I wonder what the elephants do to keep themselves occupied on a completely flat barren surface. Theres not much you can do with this space. It wouldn't be half as bad if they had some different substrates and more varied terrain along with some vegetation.
