Scanned from an Ektachrome slide. This strange hand-feeding of the females and juveniles took place in the afternoon, after the silverback Matze had been separated. This is discussed in this thread . Ape House, Frankfurt, 30th August 1973.
I forgot to mention- that while people have commented about the strange 'regimented' feel of this photo, training the Gorillas like this would also have meant they could be easily inspected at close quarters and any medicine etc or food given individually without the animals snatching (hence the folded arms) or being unruly. Like well disciplined children. May still seem odd nowadays, but it was only for a few minutes in the day.
