The Kebun Binatang Ragunan (Zoo of Jakarta) has, at the center of the park, a 32 acres (13 ha) primate section called « Schmutzer Primate Centre ». One of the most impressive exhibit of this area is the western lowland gorillas enclosure. This 2 ha (5 acres !) exhibit is just a part of the tropical forest left natural, where primates have free access to the trees and lots of other natural elements to discover. The visitors can see them from a big bridge or behind a moat.
Three gorillas live here (Komo, Kimi et Kumbo). They arrived in 2002 from Howletts (England).
I would fear that there are some plants in the exhibit that are bad for the gorillas. I guess it would be hard to list all theses plants in this enclosure and get rid of the bad ones.

Why?

Such behavior would be irresponsible for a zoo. There is no reason they couldn't identify and evaluate the safety of every plant in this enclosure.
If they somehow couldn't (and Indonesia has plenty of capable botanists) then gorillas wouldn't be placed here.

This is, after all, a zoo responsibility

There has be cases of poisonous plants in much smaller exhibits and the death of animals because of that.

Yes, that's certainly true. Although I know of very few incidents.
But to lose one animal after another in the same exhibit?
No, I can't see that being permitted.
