I do find that odd as from memory when they were still in the old house and yards the two mother/calf pairs were next to each other without any hostility. Strange to build the new house and yet still have one female and calf living in the grotty old sheds.
have you ever seen all three compartments of the new House in use- i.e. cow/calf, cow/calf, bull. i find it odd if they aren't all living in there now. What's the point of building it if they don't use it all...??
I would think the two females with the calves became incompatible, so one of them uses the old house whilst the other pair use the new house because the paddock only splits into two. It's strange, and I'm not 100% on this but I'm sure the two females and their calves are separated all the time, with one in the old house.
I would think you are right. Do you know which pair(sex of calf) still use the old yards? This regime may remain until the calves are weaned then. I wonder if they have room to keep the female calf longerterm, as she is not related to 'Hugo' of course.
I always have difficulty remembering the names of both females and which of them has which calf.
I know on the signboards around the paddock they have either got the photos (or names) of the two mothers mixed up.
Bihan is the mother of the older female calf, Asha.
Beluki is the mother of the younger male calf, Rap.
Beluki is the female with the taller horn.
There is an (older) item on their website which says the bull 'Hugo' uses the indoor pool facilities in the new exhibit, but that all three adult females(including Roopa before she died) wouldn't set foot in them so the keepers were throwing food in the water to encourage them in. Probably a case of being reluctant to try a new experience. Maybe things have changed by now.
