Not sure! Herp keepers that I know seem to favour Apes, Lemurs, Carnivores and the more unusual birds!
A few bird keepers can be frustrated herp lovers in disguise, while my admiration of all birds doesn't extend to a desire to work with them. Strange!
I started out life as a little bird enthusiast, always sketching, imitating and memorising calls, identfying every little hedge creeper and going to any length to attract more birds to my garden
"Jewels of the Forest" walk-through aviary at Durrell is one of the loveliest places in what is a very lovely zoo. I can see from the photo that the vegetation has matured exceedingly well since my last visit there just after the aviary had opened. Although not huge, it is possible to spend a very long time in this aviary, as indeed I did, returning later in the day. Jersey (Durrell) has traditionally been a bit slow in having walk-through exhibits (in an age when lemur walk-throughs and fruit bat walk-throughs are commonplace in our zoos, its lemurs and bats still do not mix with the public - although Durrell is considering having a lemur walk-through at some point in the future), so let's hope this aviary, and the new Madagascan aviary, are the shape of things to come, as the public simply love mingling with the animals.
Translucent plastic/polycarbonate walls all round, partial roof of the same, most of roof covered with flexible netting. Large covered off-exhibit retiring areas for the birds. The mild Jersey climate helps the plants to thrive. Birds breed very well in here.
