On June 29 the zoo opened ts largest exhibit ever, Africa. Africa will will be an 8 acre complex featuring the wild beauties of the African Savannah.
2008: Phase 1: Giraffe Ridge - Masai Giraffes
2010: Phase 2: Cheetah Encounter + Greater Flamingo
2013: Phase 3: Lions + Cheetahs
2014: Phase 4: Grevy\'s Zebras/Giant Elands/Gazelles/Ostriches/Crowned Cranes/Marabou Stork + Vulutures
2015: Phase 5: African Wild Dogs + Red River Hogs + Nile Crocodiles + Hippopotamuses
I'm wondering if there will be crocodiles still in Africa regardless of them being on the map. I've never heard and I might have read once the zoo saying that there will be crocodiles. Heck, they are mentioning species that were never part of the original plan in the first place so who knows. I understand the fuss about the hippos, but St. Louis's Hippo Harbor is only 3,000 sq. ft. (less than what may be planned for Cincy's judging from Google Earth) yet it's been praised.

That may or may not be so but the main issue is that, according to the new AZA regulations and standards, at least four females must be kept together in all upcoming and renovated exhibits. And if Cincy wants a calf, that's 1.4 to start out with! While I'm not too familiar with Saint Louis' enclosure, I'm sure it holds a lot less hippos.

Preach! They can get crocodiles. I saw some cool ones in the gift shop. Just put a fish tank in the mulch bed and add rubber crocodiles.
