I think the Chimp island was a few years later, circa early 1990's. The first one was a simple affair surrounded by an electric fence. Then the much bigger raised area with climbing frames and wide watermoat appeared later on. I quite liked the simpler original actually.
Now I'm not saying this wasn't the case, though HantsLad no doubt will. However, I do know from experience that what appears in books isn't always the full truth.
From the look of him in the close-up photo it does look like they had a problem on their hands.
Pertinax, understand where you coming from and agree books at time extend the truth. Think also Z.S.L. had poblems with the loss of 1 or 2 eles at London. and the dreaded Zoo.check where very active.also have always woundered how Pole-Pole ended up in captiviey o yes the founders of Zoo Check had used her in a film.. Please correct me if this is not complety correct.
I was just going by the book. It says, "Desperately, the Society tried to find a collection that would take him off their hands. At twenty-three, he was a fine specimen but there were no takers and, with no other option open to them, he had to be put down. It was a heartbreaking decision but necessary to prevent the very real possibility of a human fatality."
Have often woundered if Z.S.L. had to recieve premission from the Queen for Jumbo to be shot as he was presented to the Queen from the Cameroon Govertment and belive in his early yrs live at Chystal Palace Zoo, am sure if this is incorrect Tim May will correct me.
