The Giant Eland is a hard subject to photograph because the location of their compound allows for harsh sunlight in the mornings.
All the Giant Eland in North America are owned by a private company. Any zoo/facility holding this species can only manage them with respect to the owners. Many zoos will not exhibit this species due to the complications associated with a complex arrangement or ownership/responsibilities.

How did a private company come to own all of the giant eland? Did the zoos with them just decide that they didn't want to display this species anymore and cede control to a private individual?

The answer is easy-this company, IAE, has imported the giant eland, 4.6, in 1986. One male died during the transport, the others were send to L.A and Cincinnati, where the breeding has started in 1987. So that's why all giant eland belong to that company, and that's why no giant eland were send to europe...( which will also not happen in the future )

By the way, for all giant eland lovers: The british animal figur brand Collecta will bring out an excellent, very natural looking giant eland figure in april, also a waterbuck, two giant sable ( a male and a female ) and a black wildebeest. All figures for about 6 Euros !

That is an incredible photo - I had no idea they would go in water like that.

And the story about them all being owned by a private company is fascinating. IAE - if I had to guess I would think the letters might stand for International Animal Exchange? (Never actually heard of them, just a guess as to what would logically fit).
