Lowland Streaked Tenrecs at Pilsen, 01/09/12

Hemicentetes semispinosus (off-show)

Their Highland cousins in the adjoining enclosure weren\'t feeing showy and, being rather sensitive, were left undisturbed.

Sadly, the populations of both Highland and Lowland tenrecs at Pilsen crashed to zero during 2013 according to the latest Annual Report :(

They are such short lived animals.

In March a highland Streaked Tenrec was onshow about 5 minutes walk from where I live, at the Staffordshire Exotics club meeting. It just happened to be the day I was going to Woburn.

If anyone has £900 lying around they don't need, there's a pair of these for sale at my local pet shop. Made for a surprising lunchtime.

What kind of local pet shop has these, and has customers that are prepared to go in and spend £900?

It's a pet shop-cum-garden centre with a big reptile and aquatics section as well (I go in there for crickets for my lovely little fire-bellied toads!). Latterly they have a few weirder psittacines as well (Plum-headed Parakeet being one).

The small mammals are pretty dull and usual most of the time but every so often go a bit mad - they usually have African Pygmy Hedgehogs, and have had Steppe Lemming in the past. Today, as well as the tenrecs (quite visible, curled up asleep under a bit of cork bark) there were also Harvest Mice and Pachyuromys duprasi.

I'm surprised that anything but extremely specialist places have any animal for sale for £900.
