You see huge prices in ordinary places quite a lot with big reptiles and parrots (three-figure fish are common at my preferred fish shop, Wharf Aquatics) - I guess this is just an extension of that.
That was not a normal pet shop
A pet shop with a Sun Bear, Nile Crocodiles, Cheetahs, Hyaenas, and loads of other stuff like that isn't something I'd class as particularly typical.
I have only visited once, some years ago, and the biggest oddity was an unspeakably obnoxious member of staff. They do get some interesting stock, but I was not particularly impressed by the aquatics and have never felt the urge to return. If I were looking for rare fishes I would go elsewhere.

As a further little coda to this - I've been in again today and they now have tenrecs of four species - Tailless Tenrec (£400 each), Greater Hedgehog Tenrec (£300 each), and both Lowland and Highland Streaked Tenrec (at £900 a pair again).
Highland Streaked Tenrecs I'd never seen before, so that was nice! (they even woke up and moved about!)
African Pygmy Dormice and Sugar Gliders have also appeared since last time.
