This photo shows one of the outdoor orang-utan exhibits at Melbourne Zoo. On the day I visited there were two orang-utans in here in the morning but later on there were a family of siamangs.

I think it's a believable amount...They needed to clear the area build a double storey building for viewing areas, an indoor day room and holding areas which would have cost somewhere in the millions alone. Plus a massive netted exhibit with netting durable enough to hold an adult male orang-utan, all of the specially made sway poles and transplanting live palms from other parts of the zoo. Also 15% of the costs were on design so that would be a large sum in itself just for design.
 
The sway poles are made of metal and fibreglass. There are over 200 in the open exhibit!!

I was surprised that the whole orangutan sanctuary cost $6.5m, a bit excessive in my opinion. :)

Thanks, I imagine they were quite expensive the. Anyway the $6.5m isn't too bad for what looks like a really impressive exhibit
