This website, messybeast.com, is THE source for all types of rare cat forms (hybrids and alternate colors). There is nothing like it anywhere. On the page on black lions, he does mention a couple of confirmed cases of partially black lions that I was not aware of. But as I said, no DOCUMENTED cases of fully black (melanistic) lions.
I wasn't talking about "real" black lions, only by name which was as people wrote here talked about their black mane
so it's ok
we are talking about the same thing, i guess

Sorry to drag up an old thread but are the Abyssinian Lions the ones from Ethiopia that were being tested to see how genetically distinct they are? And if so, what were the results?
The name 'Menelik' comes from Menelik II, Emperor of Ethiopia, one of whose titles was The Lion of Judah. Menelik's defeat of an invading Italian army in 1896 inspired many African and Afro-American people
I wonder if this old lion was another part of the inspiration for Rex Stewart's composition 'Menelik the Lion of Judah' from 1941 - a great favourite of mine. It is a very odd piece in which Rex growls with his mouthpiece and then plays beautiful open trumpet. He keeps Duke Ellington in the background, featuring the diverse talents of Sonny Greer, Harry Carney and Jimmy Blanton to keep the group swinging hard. Rex was a New Yorker, so he may have seen this lion. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bjFFM4RT4vc
On the subject of Menelik II, although digressing from lions:-
Menelik II, Emperor of Abyssinia (Ethiopia), presented a zebra to Jules Grevy, the President of France; this animal became the type specimen of Grevy’s zebra.
Menelik also presented Grevy’s zebras to Queen Victoria which she deposited at London Zoo. (I have an old London Zoo postcard of a Grevy’s zebra which is captioned Menelik’s zebra.)
