no its open and the lions are there (see the Dublin Zoo thread). I'm assuming they were pressed for time and didn't get a chance to get any grass established before the lions arrived which is a shame as surely having lions living in it will make it harder to get the grass growing? All I can see are vague patches of green near some of the rocks.
Well, actually Asian Lions live (mostly) in dry forest. But this means also for the anouncement of Dublin Zoo: 1. There are not enough trees to make this exhibit a forest-like exhibit. 2. I've been in Dublin only once. But if I remember correctly, the clima there is far away from being hot and dry (as in the Gir Forest). It was more fresh/cold and humid...
Of course most northern and central european zoos can not immitate the original environment of their animals completely. But more plants in the exhibit would be much more "interesting" for the lions, even if those plants does not exist in their natural environment. Zoo Zurich does it much better. Wonder why Dublin does not copy that.
I think if trying to imitate dry forest in Gir (if that is what the exhibitry is attempting to convey) then it needs a little more than just not having grass.

It´s not being built - it´s done.. This picture is the final look of the exhibit..
It´s just at the beginning, next to the entrance buildings and toilets. (Former Sumatran Tiger exhibit.) First enclosure you´ll see when you enter the zoo and turn left.
