Newly Renovated Orangutan Forest

The exhibit is 1300 square metres and features 11 artificial trees 7-12m in height.

June 2016.

Orangutans are a major design challenge, of course, but the classic poll-and-rope approach would have provided more climbing opportunities and probably looked better, too.

The website quote sounds very similar to the claim they made when they opened the Gorilla exhibit. It raises expectations which the reality is then hard put to match up with. And IMO Orangs are about the hardest of all species to provide really good housing for.

I believed these fake trees are designed to encourage more climbing by having food high up, in which case their bulky appearance has some purpose. But I wish as well as the cross-over above the public walkway, that they were also all linked up with more climbing paraphernalia- ropes, plastic vines etc as there is a great deal of empty space in this exhibit which could be capitalised on.
