Last time I went they did give out antiseptic handwipes with the food, but I don't know how effective this would be.
I'd also guess that lots of people carry some sort of firstaid kit in their cars which would / could contain useful items for the animal feed clean up operation.

I agree many/most people carry 'child kits' with them for such eventualities. I'm still a bit surprised West Midlands allow it though given how safety conscious most places are nowadays.

Last time I was there I saw an eland eat the whole box of food, not sure how dangerous it is to their system, but I guess thin cardboard will break down in their system,pity some people are so dim that they allow this to happen in the first place.
I think the feeding should be left to staff and to the private tour bus thats goes around because of all the reasons stated above. For example, 2 years back we went on the bus tour and I got to feed a giraffe banana, to my delight of course. But we had to wipe our hands with antiseptic wipes straight after. I believe the only public feeding to animals should be on these private tours.
