Ceratotherium simum cottoni

The single female Nabire, last individual in Europe (housed with a single male Southern White).

My third time seeing this taxon and sadly could well be my last. Even sadder, having seen the Dvur group before the shipment back to Africa, as well as the San Diego pair, I\'ve seen every confirmed living individual of Ceratotherium simum cottoni.
"Nabire"was born at Dvur Kralove 15.November 1983 to male"Sudan" and female"Nasima"; so she is getting 30 in two and a half month. She was the second pure cottoni born there. The first calf, a female named"Nasi", was Born in 1977, but she was a hybrid between both subspecies, fathered by a simum bull.

Unfortuantely,"Nabire" never became a mother herself.Orginally it was planned to send her back to Kenya also, but she stayed in Dvur because she isn't able to breed anymore.

Ah yes, I misread "1983" to read "1993" :p

So it is even more imperative that anyone wanting to see her gets to Dvur ;)

A great species, does anybody know how old this specimen is? Hope she sticks around for a few for more years. :D

According to Rookmaaker's book on captive rhinos, ‘Nabire’ was born at Dvur Kralove on 15th November 1983 so she is almost thirty. (EDIT:- sorry I typed this before I saw the similar post from "Bib Fortuna".)

Having seen northern white rhino in several zoos, most notably ‘Ben’ countless times in London Zoo, it really is a sobering thought that, unless I return to Dvur Kralove or San Diego soon, I’ll probably never see another individual....

It's almost enough to make me want to add Dvur as a long-distance hop to perform during my intended trip to Berlin next year :p but I think it would be a bit *too* far, sadly.

It is far, but not TOO far from Berlin. You can take a Train leaving 6:46 in the morning, Arrival at Dvur 13:58. So you could spend the rest of the day at the Zoo,which is really open til late evening-I was there last year until 10'o Clock in the night-and animals, even elephants, were still outside and the Barns open...Only the Birdhouse and the Aquarium were closed. at 7 o'clock.

Stay a night or two at the Safarihotel of the Zoo, including admission to the Park, and you will have an unforgettable time-the Hotel is cheap and excellenct, and , as I said, you have unlimted Access to the Park until late evening...The third day, you return to Berlin...

Iyou are interested in rhinos and hoofstock, I would take that Chance, if you have time enough..

It will be a great shame when all Northern white rhinoceros go extinct. Let's hope the Eastern black rhinoceros doesn't get to that situation, however with the way some collections (Chester, Aspinalls etc) breed I fear that this won't happen! :D

Hehe, suspect the above would be rather too stressful and complex for my girlfriend on top of a multi-day trip to Berlin - if it takes that long to reach Dvur from Berlin I suspect it would make more sense to save that collection until I do Plzen and Prague at some point. Which returns me to the "probably won't be in time" camp :p

Nabire, sadly passed on this week, no more northern white rhino in Europe.

It's been a while coming :( think we can now safely say I will never see this taxon in my lifetime.
